A cloud mender's last letter
Aethermender
The snow came and never stopped. People went beneath the earth and forgot the sky. You never did. Dig your way up, mend the clouds, bring back the rain.
The town behind this page is alive, right here on your screen.
Story
The snow never stopped.
Once, this world was green. There were forests, flowers and warm rains, and the iron clouds your grandfather built carried water to the soil. Then the snow came, and it never stopped. Not a single tree was left standing.
People went down beneath the earth. Deep below, they built a small, warm town, and in time they forgot the sky. Everyone in town still has an iron cloud of their own; every one of them has stood rusted and silent for years.
But one of them never forgot: your grandfather, the cloud mender. He is gone now. In his shed he left you a book, a few strange tools and a letter, and the letter points up. Beyond twenty layers of rock and ice, the surface is waiting. Break the ice, gather the water, wake the clouds one by one. If the rain comes back, so will the green.
“My dear grandchild… When the clouds rain, everything turns green. You will see.”
